Aiko and the Swan's Test

Aiko had three weeks until the Academy Certification exams β€” the ones that would still count whenever the Antariksha found its way home β€” and she was drowning in flashcards. So when a post surfaced on the ship's feed promising "the NeuroSurge Protocol: the study hack the academies don't want you to know," she didn't scroll past. Forty hours awake, ice-cold showers, a grey powder from the trade stores, and your memory would "reset to genius." The post had two hundred thousand likes from back home, a doctor in a white coat, and a countdown timer. Aiko shared it to the study channel with three fire emojis.

By the end of the week, half the study group was "resetting." Then Tomas fainted at hour thirty-one, cracked his head on a seed tray in hydroponics, and spent two nights in medbay.

Aiko's summons arrived the next morning. It led her into a hall she could not see the end of β€” shelves of books, scrolls, star-charts and server crystals rising like cliffs into mist. On a white lotus sat a woman dressed in plain white, a veena resting across her lap, a swan waiting at her feet. "I am Saraswati," she said. "Sit. We are going to feed my swan."

She poured milk and water into a single bowl, stirred them together, and set it down. The swan dipped its beak, drank, and stepped back. The milk was gone. The water remained. "My swan has one power," Saraswati said. "Given a mixture, it takes what nourishes and leaves the rest behind. Every claim you will ever meet is such a bowl β€” some milk, some water, stirred so you cannot see the difference. You, child, drank the whole bowl. Then you passed it down the table."

"There was a doctor," Aiko said. "Two hundred thousand people liked it."

"Two hundred thousand people once liked a picture of a shark swimming down a flooded highway," said Saraswati. "Numbers measure spread, not truth. Come."

Above an alcove in the endless library, four questions were carved into the stone: Who is saying this? How could they know it? What has been left out? Who benefits if I believe it? The hall, Saraswati explained, held a record of nearly everything β€” she simply made Aiko do the finding. Two hours later Aiko had it all: the "doctor" was a paid actor with a costume-house stethoscope; the account behind the post also sold the grey powder; the "study" was a survey of eleven customers, run by the company itself; and left out entirely was a century of evidence that a sleep-starved brain remembers less, not more.

"Checking took me two hours," Aiko said, half in protest.

"Believing took you two seconds," said Saraswati, "and cost Tomas two days. Slow is not the opposite of smart. Ask the question beneath the question. The question on top is always is this exciting? The question beneath is is this true?" She set Aiko a practice: one claim a day for a fortnight β€” anything from the feed β€” run through the four questions before sharing. Some claims passed; they tended to be the boring, sturdy ones. Most of the viral ones dissolved like powder in water.

The hardest part was the correction. Aiko posted what she had found and what she had got wrong, under her own name. A few crewmates mocked her for falling for it; one or two kept doing the protocol anyway, because people do. But the study group stopped, and Tomas replied with a single word: thanks. She taped a card with the four questions above her console. On her last visit to the hall, the swan was drinking from another bowl. "You cannot stop the water being poured," Saraswati said. "There will always be mixtures. Be the swan."
